Christmas is just around the corner and DVDs make perfect stocking stuffers. I’ve taken the guess work out of buying DVDs for your friends with my list of recent releases sure to please even the most eclectic person.
For the Action Junkie:Â The Bourne Ultimatium
Bourne is back in the best film of the series. It’s like an adrenaline shot that never quits.Â
For the Brooding Boys and Girls:Â Angel: The Complete Series Box
Angel broods and fights evil (and the evil within) over 5 seasons in this handsome boxed set that contains the entire series.
For Fantasy Fans of all ages:Â Stardust
Stardust is the best film of its kind since The Princess Bride and easily one of the year’s best films.
For the Emo Goth Horror Fan:Â Halloween
I didn’t see Rob Zombie’s remake of the slasher fav but nothing says an emo goth Christmas like a maniac hacking and slashing teens.
For the Artsy/Sensitive College Age Guys and Gals:Â Cashback
Cashback is a unique, interesting and weird little comedy drama about an art student/insomniac who discovers he is able to freeze time and uses it to paint naked women in the aisles of the store he works at overnight. Written and directed by a fashion photographer, every shot in the film looks great.  Cashback is also proof that indie films don’t all have to look like poop smeared ugly DV crap.
For Indie Fans Tired of Smug/Hipster Indie Crap:Â 10 Items or Less
10 Items or Less was a woefully under-seen comedy with a wonderful Morgan Freeman (playing a surreal version of himself) as a vain but fun actor who spends the day with a feisty supermarket cashier (lovely and charming Paz Vega) doing research for a new role. There’s no sign of “hipster dialogue” or that creep Ethan Hawke anywhere in sight.
For The Sci Fi Junkie:Â Blade Runner:Â The Final Cut
The most influential science fiction film in decades comes to DVD in a spiffy new cut with a terrific and definitive documentary. Get the briefcase if you have the cash.  It’s so sweet it will even get fans out of their Mom’s basement.
For Anyone Who Loves a Good Comedy:Â The Simpsons Movie
It’s very funny and a fine extension of the long-running animated favorite. It also made over 500 million worldwide and proved that The Simpsons still have legions of loyal fans.Â
For the 80s Kids who Never Grew UP:Â Transformers
Transformers is rock em sock em trash elevated by photo-real effects and a likable performance by Shia LeBeouf. I liked it a lot.
For People You Hate:Â Tideland and The Fountain
A double feature of these two disasters will cause even the most sane relative or friend to consider ending it all. Happy Holidays !
