Photograpy: Interview with Jean Sebastien Monzani Part 1

While browsing online searching for inspirations and ideas in photography, I came across Jean-Sebastien Monzani’s portfolio site. His work is unique in a sense that he combines portrait photography with fantasy art. It’s hard to describe, but his work is captivating, and very well-thought out. It’s not just photography, it’s photography combined with graphic design, 3-D design, and a story.

I was amazed by his work so I decided to do an interview with him.

Nerdsociety (NS): Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Jean-Sebastien Monzani (JSM):
I am a Swiss and French self-taught photographer born in 1975 who …

 Photography: Capistrano Mission in BW

I was bored this past weekend, so I decided to go out on photo trip. I took my 35mm SLR film camera and loaded it with a BW Tmax100 roll. I headed down South and visited the San Juan Capistrano Mission. I thought it would be suiting to take pictures in BW since that place is ancient. Also, I read online that one can “push” his or her film to suit the lighting conditions.

I used a tripod with this shot, the composition isn’t there, and it’s crooked.

A Tmax100 film is usually very clean. The grains are superbly fine, it’s …

Photography: MMA in True Black & White

Nerdsociety was able to get press passes for a local MMA show called Long Beach Fight Night. I went  as the main photographer. I brought with me 2 cameras, a DSLR and a 35mm SLR. I used the DSLR for the most part, but switched to my film camera when i got the chance. I used a 3200 ISO film for the low-light conditions, which means that I’m able to shoot without using flash. The trade-off are the grains. If you look closely to the shots below, you’ll notice tons of grains. Most people hate the grains, but I like it …

Photography: Black & White Gone Wrong

Remember when I said that I would make my life a little harder by taking pictures in film? Well, I did. I went to the Getty Museum to see what I can get with my old Canon A-1 camera. The Getty is a nice place for photography because of the architecture and the view from above LA. I’m intrigued with black & white photography, so I used a BW film, Tmax 100 to be exact.…

So, I decided to take a photographic trip to San Francisco along with the family. As I’ve heard from other photographers, November is the best time to photograph the city. They were right, instead of eating turkey at my Uncle’s house, we drove for 6 hrs on turkey day. Damn, that was a long drive. On our way to SF, we encountered many different weather conditions, which was great for photography, but not so great for driving. The fog was so thick at one point that all the cars had to slow down. After we passed through the fog, the lighting …

So, last week was pretty much hell here in Southern California. Many homes were destroyed, and memories wiped out. Due to the high winds and the humiditiy, many homes caught on fire. The fire started out in Santa Barbara and spread all the way down to Brea and Yorba Linda area.…

Centering the focal point is usually a no-no when it comes to photography. The professionals and experts say that it makes the image look boring, and less appealing. But, not according to Christopher Morris. Morris is a photojournalist with a unique sense of style. He has covered the world’s dangerous hot spots. His photographic style showed me that centering the composition has its place in photography.
