2008 Oscar Predictions

It’s that time of the year, Oscar season. This year is pretty tough because many nominated movies were in the same genre. Winners in Bold.

No Country will take this one. Sure it’s overrated, but it seems like it can’t be stopped.

It’s Official: Blu Ray Wins the DVD Format War, HD-DVD is OUT !

Eary this morning the AP confirmed what many already knew to be the case, that Blu Ray has won the DVD format war.  Toshiba will stop producing HD-DVD players and recorders:

Toshiba quits HD DVD business

By YURI KAGEYAMA, AP

Toshiba said Tuesday it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders, handing a victory to rival Blu-ray disc technology in the format battle for next-generation video.

“We concluded that a swift decision would be best,” Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida told reporters at his company’s Tokyo offices.

The move would make Blu-ray — backed by Sony Corp., …

Rant of The Week – Death Sentence

Rant of The Week – Death Sentence

death sentence mob Rant of The Week Death Sentence

There’s too much crap in our pop culture that we’ve decided to have a new weekly article on it. So without further ado:

I netflix’d this movie after seeing potential in the film. Boy was I wrong. The first rant goes to a movie that defies logic and unnecessary plot twists. It’s directed by the great James Wan, director of the also incoherent Saw and stars Kevin Bacon. If you guessed Death Sentence, you are right. It’s suppose to be a new version of the classic franchise, Death Wish. But what we got was a boring and tedious movie with a …

Film Review: Rambo

Film Review: Rambo

rambo galleryposter Film Review: Rambo

Rambo is back and better than ever.  The patriotic (aka right wing) icon returns to take out basically the entire Burmese army.  Whatever Rambo lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in pure action and ultraviolence.  This is easily the goriest film in years and makes SAW 4 look like a slow ride to grandma’s house.  I doubted that Sly Stallone could make a good film out of the Rambo franchise but he proved me wrong once again, much like he did with the surprisingly effective Rocky Balboa.  Stallone strips away the cartoonish goofiness of Rambo 3 in favor of a …

Heath Ledger 1979-2008

Heath Ledger 1979-2008

order2 Heath Ledger 1979 2008

By now, everyone knows about the untimely death of actor Heath Ledger, the talented actor who was well on his way to stardom.  He was due to play the iconic Joker in the next Batman film, The Dark Knight.  Here is a listing of his work that I have seen that is well worth a spot on your Netflix queue.  All of the following should be readily available on DVD.

Roar:  The short-lived but entertaining FOX series is the first time I noticed Ledger.  He was a young leader of a Celtic tribe fighting to protect his people and land from …

joker Heath Dead...

Heath Ledger was found dead today in a Manhattan apartment surrounded by sleeping pills. There will be a planned autopsy wednesday to see if suicide was the case.

I just found out the news here from my coworker and was shocked. He will be missed. I am really looking forward to seeing him as the Joker in “The Dark Knight.”…

10 Overrated Actors/Actresses

10 Overrated Actors/Actresses

 kevin spacey32 10 Overrated Actors/Actresses

” Hey guys……I feel like dancinggggggggggggggggggg ! “

This list consists of high profile actors and actresses only.  I don’t really care enough to include current indie “It” actors like Ellen Page because they have just started their careers and it would be unfair.  It’s time to go after the big dogs and the sell-outs.

1.  Kevin Spacey:  The prancing method actor is in one bad film after another.  A quick trip to imdb.com reveals that Spacey started off his career very promisingly in films like Seven, Swimming with Sharks, and The Usual Suspects.  He’s made extreme amounts of …

Top 10 Anticipated Movies of 08

Top 10 Anticipated Movies of 08

wall e Top 10 Anticipated Movies of 08

Let’s face it, 2007 was the year of uninspired movies. Most movies were forgettable and too many dull third installments were released. 2008 seems to change that with franchises coming back in full force and some fresh original movies. Below are the top 10 anticipated movies in 08.

10) Cloverfield – This movie probably won’t be as bad and overhyped as Blair Witch Project. With J.J. Abrams involvement in the project, I expect this to be an intelligent, thought provoking monster movie. Let’s hope the crew learned the mistakes from the American produced Godzilla.

9) Wall-E – I have to admit, …

Bye bye HD-DVD

Bye bye HD-DVD

blu ray discsvg Bye bye HD DVD

Warner Brothers on Friday announced they will Blu-Ray exclusive after May. A couple of days later, New Line, WB’s sister company also announced exclusivity to Blu. Yes, my fellow movie geeks, Lord of the Rings will only be released on Blu-Ray. With the recent announcements, only Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks have full support HD-DVD, while Blu-Ray has Disney, Fox, WB and of course Sony’s movie division, Columbia.

I am saddened by this news, I always thought WB was siding with HD. They released more titles on HD than Blu. Rumors circulated that Sony paid $500 million for the exclusivity. Same rumor also …

The Top 10 Films of 2007

The Top 10 Films of 2007

stardust bigreleaseposter The Top 10 Films of 2007

Note:  I have not seen many of the “acclaimed” films out there.  The ones I would still like to see include Smiley Face, Once, There Will Be Blood,  and The King of Kong.  These are my favorite 10 films that I have actually seen.

1.  Stardust:  Stardust is my favorite film of the year and an instant fantasy classic.  The DVD is good (but not great) and I expect an upgrade in the near future as word spreads of this highly enjoyable and highly underrated film.

2.  Day Watch:  Russian horror/fantasy/action/drama outdoes the original film (Night Watch) and is one …
