Having seen the trailer a couple of months back, I thought it was going to be awful. The cheesy action scenes, the bad one liners, predictable story.  It seemed like it was trying too hard to be cool. A week before the movie came out, I was hearing good buzz about it. Then I learned, Timur Bekmambetov directed the movie. This has been a very good summer for comic book films, they have been very high quality, exciting and entertaining so far. The best is yet to come I’m sure when The Dark Knight opens in July. My only major complaint so far is that there have been a lack of compelling villains in both Iron Man and now in The Incredible HULK, a problem that I’m sure Heath Ledger will remedy in The Dark Knight.…

In Bruges is one of the best surprises of the year so far. It’s hilarious and extremely well-written and acted by its expert cast. It works as a travelogue of a beautiful area of Belgium as well as a razor-sharp dark comedy with flashes of brutal violence and genuine pathos along the way. The three leads are particularly good and the supporting cast all does fine work. This is an amazing debut film from Irish Martin McDonaough. He is known for his stage plays and makes a terrific transition to the world of film. Collin Farrell in particular is surprisingly good …

In the past couple of years, the director of Happening, M. Night Shyamalan has received a lot of criticism. Most of it are well deserved since he’s an ego-maniac(like CCFMDS wrote, he played a savior in Lady In The Water) and his movies were getting progressively worse. With movies like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk alright out in theatres, one can see that Marvel is planning something big. Since Marvel’s able to produce their own movies now, they can reap the benefits from their own characters.  Except for X-Men or Spider-Man, where Sony and Fox got the rights for that.  Those bastards!

Stan Winston, the special effects/make up artist guru, passed away yesterday from cancer at the age of 62. Here’s more info about his life and his battle with cancer. Personally for me, I’ve thought he created the coolest, most convincing creatures that has been seen on the silver screen. He was the man that made the Predators come to life. He also worked with James Cameron(Titanic, True Lies) on Aliens and the bad ass Terminator franchise.

M Night Shyamalan’s rise and fall is the stuff of greek mythology (or maybe greek tragedy).  M Night was born in India in 1970 but raised in a wealthy suburb of Philadelphia, and was thought of as an adopted son in the area.  I’m also from a suburb of Philadelphia and I’ve admired the way M Night filmed the city and his devotion to using the area in all of his movies.  I enjoyed the sense of menace and dread in his earlier works and the way he smoothly worked the camera.  His films used to have an eerie, otherworldly quality.  …

The Fall is easily the most visually stunning film of this or any year in at least the past decade.  It was co-written and directed by Tarsem Singh (you can always tell when some jealous critic hates him because he comments on how Tarsem only goes by one name) and it’s a beautifully made adult fable about the healing power and strength of love.  The Fall is full of wonderfully evocative scenery and beasts (dead trees, deep blue buildings, palaces, elephants swimming along in the ocean) and it weaves a tale of good versus evil, real world versus fantasy world …
