I just heard on the news that Bernie Mac died from pneumonia, he was 50 years old. You can read more about his career here. I’ll remember him for his tv show on FOX, the self titled, Bernie Mac Show. The show was funny with a lot of truth to it. He also had a great cameo in Transformers.

American Teen is the terrific new documentary from Nanette Burstein. It follows the lives and loves, heartbreak and triumphs of five typical high school seniors growing up in a place called Warsaw, Indiana. They follow some teen movie archetypes. There’s the mean girl, the jock, the band geek, the outsider, and the heartthrob. What makes American Teen stand out is the twists and turns revealed as the film goes along. Initially skeptical of its ultra-slick MTV packaging, American Teen starts to chip away at your doubts and reservations. Just before I go on my rant I want to let you guys know that I love Batman. I’ve watched the movies, the animated series, read the comics and own the graphic novels. Some of you guys have seen my action figure collection and most of the majority are Batman. I have figures from Kotobukiya to Mattel’s DC Superheroes line. And I loved Batman Begins, the best comic book movie of all time.

Never Back Down defines the guilty pleasure movie. It’s not particularly original or well-acted, but it’s a lot of fun, as long as you don’t take it too seriously. It tries to preach anti-violence but the story is really just an excuse for a lot of mixed martial arts mayhem set to hipster alt-rock music. Never Back Down mixes older (and better) films into a blender and hits the mix button. Setting a hipster indie film in a cereal bar isn’t necessarily a bad idea. After all, Kevin Smith made two extremely funny Clerks films set in a dumpy convienence store. But where Clerks had lots of laughs and some bitingly crude and original dialogue, Flakes has none of the above. It cruises along on “whimsy” until it crashes and burns into an abyss of hipster nothingness. Growing up, The X-Files was one of my favorite shows. As a self-described X-Files nerd (check the name I write under, guys and gals), I was eagerly anticipating the new X Files movie. Subtitled “I Want to Believe”, it’s the perfect sentiment for fans who were let down by the last few seasons of the show. Joblo has an article up about their hatred towards the MPAA. This takes me back to my first viewing of “Indiana Jones: the Temple of Doom.” I was a kid at the time, and the first time I saw the witch doctor performed that heart transplant without the transplant on that poor defenseless dude, I literally grabbed my chest just to make sure no one was trying to steal my heart away. Wanted is a hardcore, ultra-violent action blowout. It’s loud, gory, and amoral. I loved every minute of it. Wanted is really made just for fanboys and men who like their action films like they like their women (fast, loud, and holding two guns that can shoot bullets that curve and bend time). It’s hard to defend a film so in love with violence and bullets, so I won’t even try. I do plan to marry the woman who loves this film, and I’m sure she’s out there somewhere.
