DVD Box Set Review: Dead Like Me.

Dead Like Me is a Dark Comedy about undead Grim Reapers “living” their lives and taking the souls of strangers before they die. Presented to them on “Post-It” notes, each reaper is given the name, place and time when they are to pluck their victims soul before they pass into the great beyond.

While not reaping, these grim characters live somewhat normal lives by either working or stealing for a place to live and to keep food on their plates. (The undead have to eat too!)

The main story focuses on Georgia (George) {Ellen Muth} a girl in her late teens …

The Batman1 Full DVD Review: 5 Seasons Of The Batman.

Ask me a few years ago what I thought of the–at the time–new animated series The Batman and I would have said it was terrible, or maybe to a lesser extent that it was all right. Ask me today and I’ll reply with regret and some comments on how good it really is.

The Batman has really grown on me, not only do I appreciate the cartoon itself so much more than I had when it first came on, but I also love the action figures.

The Batman is based mostly upon the blockbuster live-action movie Batman Begins. It starts …

Bandslam DVD Review: Bandslam

Charming, energetic and amusing, Bandslam is one of the best surprises in some time. After an abbreviated theatrical run over the summer and some terrible marketing, this little gem arrives unheralded onto DVD. Easily one of the most overlooked and underrated movies of 2009, Bandslam should have no problems finding its tween and teen audience on DVD, but the movie isn’t just for them, it’s for anyone who wants a well-written movie about the power of music from the John Hughes school of filmmaking. Some of the twists are predictable, the movie is a tad overlong, and the issues raised are …

Capitalism DVD DVD Review: Capitalism: A Love Story

Michael Moore’s documentaries are entertaining, informative, and always controversial. His best, like Roger and Me and Bowling for Columbine, hold up, even years later. Moore’s searing indictment of the greed and unregulated chaos that has ruled our way of life since Ronald Regan was elected president, Capitalism is a must-see. Moore’s clear-eyed and unrelenting push at truth is filled with entertaining montages, signature Moore theatrics, and a tragic sense of doom and irony. Starting out by visiting desperate Americans on the verge of being evicted from their homes, and tracing the roots of our economic downfall, Capitalism is a wide-ranging and …

Law Abiding Citizen DVD Review: Law Abiding Citizen

Law Abiding Citizen is a wild mash up of SAW and Death Wish, though not as good as either one. Starring Gerald Butler (of 300 and many lame romantic comedies) and Jamie Foxx (who sleep-walks through his role), the movie starts out entertaining enough but starts to lose it and by the end goes off the tracks completely.

Butler plays a family man named Clyde Shelton whose wife and young daughter are brutally raped and murdered before his eyes. An up-and coming district attorney named Nick (Jamie Foxx) cuts a deal with the defense which sends one of the suspects to …

Planet HULK DVD Review: Planet HULK 2 Disc Special Edition

Planet HULK may be based on an acclaimed comic book run, but something was clearly lost in translation. Flatly animated, the storyline plays like a one-note Gladiator. HULK is a tough character to base an entire animated movie around unless the supporting characters are memorable and the storyline compelling and Planet HULK just doesn’t get the job done. It’s nowhere near as good as the Ultimate Avengers movies and closer to their boring animated Iron Man movie (which was a true disaster, complete with new-age mysticism hooey and a boring Tony Stark arc).

Planet HULK (what a goofy title) starts with …

I Hate Valentines Day1 DVD Review: I Hate Valentines Day

Nia Vardalos is a genuine success story. Her low-budget and charming movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was a huge hit and launched her career into the stratosphere. Sadly, she’s had nothing but flops since. Trying to get by on that film by first milking it for an awful, short-lived spinoff series for television was her first big mistake. It doesn’t help anyone that the character she plays in I Hate Valentine’s Day named Genevieve is a borderline lunatic florist with relationship issues and a stupid rule that sets the idiotic plot into motion.

Genevieve is a florist with a strict …

Surrogates DVD Review: Surrogates

Surrogates should have been an exciting, action-packed science fiction movie in the vain of The Fifth Element or I, Robot; but it’s nowhere near as good as those movies. It’s kind of bland, and oddly for a movie that cost around 80 million bucks to make, looks kind of cheap. The movie was a box office flop upon release and its easy to see why. It’s just not very good.

Bruce Willis (usually reliable) sleep-walks through his role as an FBI agent investigating a murder. The murder takes place in the near future, where robotic “surrogates” stand in for real people …
