Blu-Ray Review: Oblivion

oblivion Blu Ray Review: Oblivion

Although Oblivion took in $300 million at the box office (including international), it was released in the U.S. without much fanfare.  I remember seeing a couple of trailers for it and noticed it was playing at a drive in a couple of weeks after its release.  I checked it out and surprised by the entertainment value.  The last third of the movie is a bit anti climactic and a let down but everything before that was great.  I wondered who directed the movie because it had a slick look and the music was great.  The soundtrack reminded me of Tron: Legacy …

Blu-Ray Review: Enter The Dragon 40th Anniversary Edition

enter the dragon Blu Ray Review: Enter The Dragon 40th Anniversary Edition

To me, Enter the Dragon is a classic for one reason, Bruce Lee. Lee changed the landscape of martial arts cinema in the 70s when he introduced a more “realistic” style of fighting, rather than the traditional “Crouching Tiger” style of kung-fu. Not to mention that many martial artists today consider Lee the pioneer of MMA (mixed martial arts). Lee’s philosophy is, to discard what is useless, and take what is useful. It doesn’t matter what style it came from. This philosophy is showcased in the first part of Enter the Dragon, when Lee uses grappling to beat down …

oz 813x1024 Blu Ray Review: Oz The Great And Powerful 3D

Disney releases another live action re-imagining, this time it’s the origins of “Oz.”

The movie is better than Disney’s Alice In Wonderland but similar problems arise.

First, the acting.  James Franco plays the role of Oz as he’s magically transported to the fairy tale world of uhm…Oz.  Franco tries his best to be purposefully hammy but just comes out as bad acting.  The rest of the cast is a bit better but when the lead actor is terrible, the movie is off to a bad start.

Sam Raimi, the man behind the original Spider-Man movies, still shoots the movie with great …

Shanghai Noon is an entertaining comedy buddy movie featuring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.  The formula is the same as Rush Hour with a Chinese lawman coming to America to solve a case.  Of course he accidentally partners up with a wise cracking American and hilarity ensues due to culture contrast.  The difference from both movies is the setting.  Rush Hour was present day while Shanghai Noon is Western, circa 1880’s.  A Chinese princess is kidnapped and it’s up to Jackie Chan to save her.  He meets up with a jerkish outlaw played by Owen Wilson.  They work together to save …

Blu-ray Review: Lincoln

Blu-ray Review: Lincoln

lincoln Blu ray Review: Lincoln

Lincoln is a Steven Spielberg film with great acting and production value.  It was a hit with the audience and earned Daniel Day-Lewis a best actor Oscar.

For me, it was mediocre.

The way the story is presented is fascinating.  It doesn’t show big Civil War battles and focuses on the passing of the 13th amendment, the law abolishing slavery.  As much as I wanted to get into the movie, I couldn’t do it.  Spielberg’s presentation of the movie felt like a stage play to me.  The delivery of the lines sounded like it was for a live show.  This reason …

Blu-Ray Review: Monsters, Inc. 3D

Blu-Ray Review: Monsters, Inc. 3D

Monsters, Inc., might be the most underrated Pixar flick to date.  While it grossed a whole bunch of money and loved by critics, fans don’t really mention Monsters as one of their favorite Pixar movie.  After watching it again, it’s easy to see why.  The synopsis sounds predictable with 2 monsters: big blue hairy Jake and the small one eyed Zakowski taking care of a human toddler named Boo.

Jake and his long time pal, Zakowski works at Monstropolis scaring little kids in the human world.  Sounds mean but they do to keep the city’s energy going.  The louder the kid …

Blu-ray Review: Peter Pan Diamond Edition

Blu-ray Review: Peter Pan Diamond Edition

Peter Pan is a CLASSIC animated movie.

It’s a classic in that it set new standards for cartoons including animation, storytelling and voice acting.  Originally released in 1953, Peter Pan tells the story of Wendy and her adventure in a mystical island called Never Land.  One night in her nice London home, the enthusiastic flying boy, Peter Pan takes her to the island along with her brothers.  Peter Pan has his friends in the Lost Boys and it’s their job is to stop the menacing Captain Hook and his comrades.

The animation looks dated compared to today’s animated flick but Peter …
