Best Buy is having a good deal right now:

Blockbuster had a crazy sale last week with the 5 for $20 deal.

That wasn’t good enough for Blockbuster and today sold a whole bunch of used movies for $.99.  Below is my haul, yeah I got carried away and bought movies I probably will only watch once.

Human Planet is a great mini-series that focuses on …… us. BBC has done something similar before called Planet Earth. While Planet Earth focuses more on the nature end of things such as Forests, Landscapes, and Animals, Planet Earth emphasizes on humans and our relationships with our environment. For instance, the first episode shows Whale Hunting. While some people might disagree on Whale Hunting altogether, the show focuses on why certain tribes or people have to hunt whales. The Sicilian Girl (2008) is an Italian film based on the true story of Rita Atria who, at seventeen, turned state’s evidence against the Mafiosi in her hometown after her father and brother were both murdered by them.  Rita has been hailed as a hero and also villainized for contributing to the convictions of dozens of Mafioso from her hometown.

The Sicilian Girl follows “Rita Mancuso” from the time she is a young daddy’s girl who witnesses her father’s brutal assassination.

Mortal Kommmmbbbaaaattt! 

That intro along with the techno soundtrack gave me goosebumps.  I think I was around 16 when the movie came out and since I worked at a movie theatre, I watched it several times.  The fight scenes never got old.

But that was back then, what about now?  I must admit, the movie is a bit outdated.  The fight scenes aren’t as cool and the techno is a bit cheesy.  But the nostalgia is still there so I enjoyed it.

Waiting For Superman, the critically acclaimed documentary on America’s failing public school system is now available on DVD, blu-ray, and on-demand and is easily one of the best movies of the year. If this doc doesn’t piss you off, it’s time to start checking for a pulse. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim is one angry liberal who uses facts and hipster animation and charts (very similiar to Michael Moore’s influential style) to illustrate his points about how our public school system is broken and ways it might be fixed. Guggenheim wisely keeps the focus on the kids he profiles and a few educators …

The campy Dungeons & Dragons was released in 2000 with little hype and fan fare.  It’s one of those movies that’s so bad, that it becomes entertaining.  The movie takes place in Izmer where dragons exist and an evil sorcerer, Profion (Jeremy Irons), wants to rule the land.  Savina (Thora Birch) recoginizes Profion’s evil scheme and searches for heroes that will save the world.  Along the way, she recruits the heroes for the ultimate battle in the conclusion of the film!

The movie has terrible CG but it fits well with entire production.  Acting  and the script sucks but it’s fun …

Tony Jaa was suppose to be the next big asian action movie star.  He had the lethal moves like Bruce Lee but did his own stunts Jackie Chan.  His first movie, Ong Bak, was an international success.  Martial art fans loved the movie for its brutal fight and innovative fight scenes.  But then Jaa started doing movies that were too similar to Ong Bak.  He didn’t branch out with the stories and he winded up doing Ong Bak 2.  Then came part 3.  Supposedly, Jaa, was overwhelmed with his instant celebrity status and wanted to stop making movies.  He was forced …

SAW began as a low-budget (and pretty well-made) movie many years ago and started the “torture porn” phenomenon that is still around to this day. Torture porn is on the decline and the SAW films have also gone down-hill with time. The soap-opera plots twists, awful acting, and ham-fisted social commentary and morality have become as stale as day old bread. The audience just waits around now for the “traps” created by the long dead robed old man Jigsaw (Tobin Bell, barely trying anymore) and the gory death scenes. The question: “Who’s your favorite DC character and why?”

The prize: Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Blu-Ray

Many joined and chose Batman as their favorite DC character.  Some picked Superman while a few went with Green Lantern.  One suprised us by going with Martian Manhunter.  Overall, it was exciting reading all of the entries.  Some were funny like this one from Chris J:

“Also he (Superman) reminds me of my grandfather because he wears his underwear outside his pants.”

We laughed for a good minute.

Most people chose Batman because he doesn’t have super powers, which makes him a true hero.  But the winner …
