In the most exciting fight of Ultimate Fight Night, Nam Phan outslugged the brawler Leonard Garcia.  Phan at least won 2 rounds, maybe 3.  He even dropped Garcia in the second round.  But the fight went to the judge and Garcia got the split decision.  People started yelling “bullshit” after the decision.  I thought I was overreacting when I heard the decision but everyone in the cage couldn’t believe it, including Garcia and his coach, Greg Jackson.  Jackson didn’t even want to congratulate his own fighter.

This fight took place at Evolution Fighting Champions.  Ben Syers knocked out his opponent, Bobby Ascolillo in several seconds.  The ref, Keith Peterson, did the right thing and immediately jumped in between both fighters to stop the fight and protect Ascolillo.  What happened next is one of the funniest MMA moments in recent years. Not knowing that the fight was stopped, Ascolillo, inadvertently took down the ref.  Worked his way from a side mount, where the ref taps and secured a full mount.

The MMA Encyclopedia get the job done.  It has insightful info on the fighters, the organizations and mma techniques (triangle choke, armbar, omaplate, etc.).  The fighter bios is the best part of the book.  Some bios are longer than others, it’s based on how signinificant the fighter is to the MMA community.  I learned new facts about Rickson Gracie, I didn’t know he had an open challenge in Japan after fighting Takada.  While the bios are good, I noticed one mistake.  It said that Big Nog lost to Fedor in their second match in Pride FC. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida – Rampage is a great fighter, but lately he doesn’t seem to have the hunger anymore. Machida will revert back to his roots, and try to win this fight via points. Don’t get me wrong, if given the chance, Machida will finish Rampage off. But, Rampage’s defense is very good. So, this could be an all-nighter. Machida will move around, score points here and there, and will win via points. This will be a very skillful fight, but don’t expect a finish.

Yushin Okami vs. Nate Marquardt – Okami is an unpredictable fighter, one would think he’s one-dimensional, but he’s not. His striking is sub-par but it’s enough to keep the opponents away, and his wrestling is above-average. Marquardt’s stand-up is also sub-par, he usually shines with his takedowns and ground control. He is a strong wrestler, so I think he has enough to take Okami down, and keep him there for the majority of the fight.

It seems like EA is in a lot of trouble this year, there was the NBA game that was cancelled.  Now, there venture into MMA territory has failed miserably.  The game features the best fighters outside the UFC (besides Randy Couture) including Fedor Emelianenko, Nick Diaz and legendary Japanese MMA fighters such as Sakuraba and Hidehiko Yoshida.  The game sold close to 77,000 copies the first week of release compared to 600,000 for UFC 2010.  Ouch!

If this was compared to a fight, this would be Penn (UFC) vs Stevenson (EA MMA).  In that fight, Stevenson was outclassed and outmatched …

Here’s a vid of UFC veteran, Kendall Grove, tapping to a weird looking choke.  What’s even better is that his grappling partner is a girl and probably weighs 100 lbs lighter.  The video was shot in 2004
