Human Torch’s Heartwarming Story

Human Torch’s Heartwarming Story

Davidscard1 1 Human Torch’s Heartwarming Story

Chris Evans aka Human Torch was the only good thing about the Fantastic Four movies and it seems like he’s also a nice guy.  A sick kid in UK is a big Human Torch fan and he made a drawing and wanted to give it to Chris Evans at the Captain America set.  Here’s the full story courtesy of Chris-EvansV.net:

“My little boy David loves watching the Fantastic Four films, he especially loves Chris Evans and spends a lot of time playing at being Johnny Storm. I have to play the baddie and he defeats me. He’s got his walls …

Smallville: Season 10, Episode 2 “Shield”

Smallville: Season 10, Episode 2 “Shield”

Smallville was a bit uneven, but overall another good episode. The awesome villain Deadshot (who sadly, was in the episode all too briefly) appeared in the episode and displayed a menacing charm. He was shot perfectly from low angles like a baddie in an old western. Lois Lane has packed up and moved overseas and Cat Grant has started at the Daily Planet. The opening scenes establish her as a republican go-getter (reminding me instantly of girls I attended college with) who hates heroes and sees herself as a truth-teller who would be right at home on FOX News. Keri Lynn …

Comic Review: Driver For The Dead #2

Comic Review: Driver For The Dead #2

DriverfortheDead2 cover 662x1024 Comic Review: Driver For The Dead #2

Driver for the Dead #2, not as good as the first one, but fun nonetheless. The story starts with Alabaster Graves  picking up the dead body of  Mose Freeman. Graves is accompanied by Freeman’s great granddaughter. She asks him how he became the Driver of the Dead.  Partly because Graves’ father was a race-car driver, so that explains the driving skills.

Meanwhile, the necromancer bad guy, Uriah Fallow, is out and about, taking body parts from “gifted” people. He collects body parts so he can gain their powers. Fallow finds out that Graves is traveling with Freeman’s body. So, he …

Banned Books Week: In celebration of all the stuff they don’t want you to read

gossip girl Banned Books Week: In celebration of all the stuff they don’t want you to read

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 to celebrate the freedom to read.  September 25 was the official launch and it runs through October 2.  Banned Books Week was created in response to an increase in the number of books which were banned or people attempted to ban that year.  Since then over 1000 books have been banned or “challenged” in the US.  Reasons for the uproar include profanity, slang, offensive representations of racial or religious groups, and positive portrayals of homosexuals.  Of course no book is immune to this scrutiny, even (and probably especially) Manga.

The American Library Association gathers …

DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!

DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!

kamen rider3 DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!

You might already be familiar with the Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight series currently showing in the US.  Kamen Rider V3 was a live-action, superhero TV show that first came out in the early 70’s, around the same time as Kikaider. (See my Kikaida article for more info).  A guy named Toru Hirayama got together with Ishinomoto, the creator of Kikaider, and put together a TV show based on a v3b DVD Review: Kamen Rider V3!guy who wore a mask and costume that somewhat resembled a grasshopper. It was called Kamen Rider (which means “masked rider”).

The two shows follow a similar formula:  a cyborg …

The Women of DC: Some Thoughts On Their Story

The Women of DC: Some Thoughts On Their Story

dc comics 75 postcard The Women of DC: Some Thoughts On Their Story

As  many of us may be aware,  DC Comics is celebrating  its 75th anniversary. They have designed an eye-catching blue on white logo featuring major characters  Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and the Flash (picture above).  However, I`m far from the first to comment on the fact that no female heroes grace this icon: especially disturbing is the exclusion of Wonder Woman, who was one of the first comic heroine to get a decent combined gender fan base {and later made pop culture inroads with her own TV show}.

Now, I`m certainly not complaining about the featuring of the aforementioned heavy-hitters.  WhenI …

Grant Morrison Wants Watchmen Update

Grant Morrison Wants Watchmen Update

watchmen Grant Morrison Wants Watchmen Update

DC’s superstar writer, Grant Morrison (Batman, JLA) will be working with artist Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman) on a new comic, Pax Americana.  Characters from Charlton Comics that Watchmen characters were based off will be the primary focus.  Morrison wants a similar story to Watchmen but the backdrop will be today’s political climate instead of the Cold War.

In an interview with Comic Heroes, Morrison said:

“We thought it would be appropriate to re-think and update the kind of in-your-face self-relecting narrative techniques used by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and to apply them to a whole new story which asks …
