Art: New Batman Graphic Novel

Written by Chip Kidd, the new Batman graphic novel, Death By Design, is available now, and is presented as a “what if” novel. The story is set in the 1930s, and the art is primarily in black & white.

The cover shows Batman hanging upside down, behind him is Gotham city. Heavy emphasis is placed on the 1930s fantasy style architecture of the buildings, as the story revolves around the reconstruction of Gotham city in that era. The idea behind the visuals and the mood of the novel comes from writer, Chip Kidd. Kidd wants the book to feel like a …

Kidrobot Street Fighter Mini-Figures

Kidrobot Street Fighter Mini-Figures

street fighter packaging Kidrobot Street Fighter Mini Figures

NERDSociety just received four boxed Street Fighter mini-figures from the artistic based company, Kidrobot. For those that aren’t familiar, the mini-figures are presented like Baseball cards in which the content is a surprise; the well-designed boxes could contain a regular figure, a color variant, or, if you’re lucky, a rare character. No rare character for us, but we got Ryu, Ken, and two Blankas (green and blue).

Blu-ray Review: The Secret World of Arrietty

Blu-ray Review: The Secret World of Arrietty

Secret World 1 Blu ray Review: The Secret World of Arrietty

The Secret World of Arrietty is another lush, visually enthralling classic from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Dubbed with great care by Disney and now on blu-ray with an amazing transfer, the movie springs to life. Based on the novel The Borrowers and written by the master Miyazaki, the look of the movie is quite stunning and full of vibrant life. The story also has a gentle message about respecting all creatures and beings regardless of their size or place in the food chain. Far from preachy, the movie is also just a fun adventure that bounces along from one great …

Hellboy 665x1024 Arts of Hellboys Duncan Fegredo

Here are some of Duncan Fegredo’s drawings pulled from his twitter account. Fegredo is known for his work on Mike Mignola’s Hellboy series. The Hellboy references on the pieces below are evident. The most recognized being the drawing style, and the brooding expressions of the characters. Let’s not forget Fegredo’s amazing ink-washing technique, it elevates the somber mood of his work.

Here, all four popular Monsters conveys sadness and/or loneliness. A different way of looking at the creatures.fegredo art 01 715x1024 Arts of Hellboys Duncan Fegredo

Batman always lurks the night. But, one thing he cannot hide is his sadness. We all know what happened to his parents. …

Fabok’s Variant Cover For Detective Comics

Fabok’s Variant Cover For Detective Comics

jason batman01 722x1024 Faboks Variant Cover For Detective Comics

Jason Fabok blogged about his latest variant cover for Detective Comics #9. Here, we have Batman inside the Big House. The scene shows Batman warding off inmates, and his new rivals, The Court Of Owls.

The Owls are very similar to Ninjas. As depicted by Fabok, in the cover, through their acrobatic skills, their costumes, and their swords. The Owls are untamed, they go wherever they please, and worse of all, they are resilient. Here, Batman is overwhelmed, his facial expression says it all. When will they stop? But, there is no quitting in Batman, his posture is still strong as …

Video: Inking of Batman Court of Owls

Video: Inking of Batman Court of Owls

Jonathan Glapion inks one of the story’s (Batman: Court of Owls) most memorable art. An owl swoops in and crushes the Bat. A symbol of Batman’s weakness against the Court of Owls. The art sums the whole concept of the story, not just from Batman’s perspective, but also from the previous generations of Waynes.

Glapion’s inking of Greg Capullo’s art is impressive. The inkers don’t get as much credit as the main artists do. Many readers, including myself, got the wrong idea that all they do is trace. I was wrong. As Glapion demonstrates, there’s still much artistic decisions to be …

Hulk Smash Anniversary Card

Hulk Smash Anniversary Card

smashing hulk Hulk Smash Anniversary Card

An awesome 9th Wedding Anniversary card illustrated by Mike Maihack for his wife. His art style is fun and whacky, not to mention, clever. He uses simplistic lines to define his character. Also, his use of colors are well thought out. The Hulk, smashing the wooden floor, is still in focus because of the Hulk’s green color over the brownish backdrop. The circular compositions on top and bottom on the first frame also creates a sense of repetition. Simple, yet detailed. Check out the flying fire hydrant.

I highly recommend you view his other works.…
