For the past couple of months, Dick Grayson aka Nightwing has been Batman as Bruce Wayne tries to find his way into the real world. Bruce Wayne is traveling through alternate universes where he’s a pirate, caveman and other crazy timelines. Thank writer Grant Morrison for the supernatural stories. He also made Damian (Bruce Wayne’s violent son), the new robin.
Well today, Bruce Wayne finally takes back his official role as Batman. DC is releasing a one shot today, Batman: The Return. It’s also written by Morrison and drawn by DC’s newest star artist, David Finch. The issue will have 2 covers so they can get more of your money. The focus of the story will be the transition of Grayson giving up the mantle and Bruce Wayne’s reaction to his son as Robin. The comic comes out today, 11/17/2010 and retails for $5.

Got to be honest, as a long time Batman fan I didn’t like the story idea. There was the Battle For The Cowl story line which was drawn and if I remember correctly written by Tony Daniel whom I’ve always liked–The Tenth was what I remember him most for–(late 90’s, a hot girl, great art…ect….) The story in itself was ok, but the changes throughout the years with characters and just about everything else in Batman have been way over the top for my tastes.
True the continuum needs to move on, but I don’t know, bringing Jason back as some psycho wanting revenge and I believe Jean Paul Valley is not Azrael anymore. But, Damian; man, that Batman and Son story was…COME ON!
So, if anything, it’s good that the story line is returning to normal. Dick was Batman after the Knights End story in the mid 90’s for a bit, but it doesn’t work for long, Bruce Wayne has to be Batman, he lives forever on the pages of comic books and they can “Else Worlds” the hell out of the characters, just keep the main story the way it needs to be.

I actually liked Batman and Son. But the rest of Morrison’s Batman work has been too funky for my taste. It feels more supernatural than a dark gritty comic book.
