The Winchester brothers are back, as they hunt for more demons in season 3 of Supernatural, in Blu-ray for the first time. Towards the end of Season 2, Dean (Jensen Ackles) offers his soul to the devil to save his brother Sam’s life. Sam (Jared Padalecki) wants to hear none of that, and will try his best to keep Dean from going to hell, they have one year to find a way around the deal. At first, Dean accepts his fate, and pretends to be okay with where’s he’s headed, but soon wakes up from being in denial and realizes that hell is no fun.
Like their problem isn’t big enough, the Winchesters accidentally opened the gateway from hell, and end up releasing a bunch of demons and monsters into our world. Now, they have to fight a bunch of demons that includes witches, vampires, ghosts, and even zombies amongst others. Due to the writer’s strike, this season only has 16 episodes, but they are good episodes. This is their best season yet, and the actors themselves became well acquainted with their characters, and delivers good performances throughout the season.
Video – The video presentation is impressive for a TV show. The depth of the blacks are rich and crisp, the picture quality doesn’t break down, and the bright colors are very nice. Even though there are occasional grains and specks of dusts, the feel of the show is very well represented in this Blu-ray transfer.
Video: A
Audio – The 6-channel audio tracks are strong and crisp. Although, there are some muffles here and there, the overall sound of the transfer is good. I was hoping for a TrueHD transfer, but maybe next time. WB should consider this, as it’s an extra incentive to buy the box set for the audio freaks out there. But, I am not complaining, as this is one of the best audio transfers for a TV show as of now.
Audio: B
Extras – Nothing special in this department, but it’s not empty either. Non of the extras are in HD, but here’s the list:
– A Closer Look (22 min.)
– From Legends to Reality (23 min.)
– Gag Reel (8 min.)
– Ghosfacers! Confessionals (16 min.)
– Supernatural Impala Featurette (5 min.)
Extras: C
Overall: This is a very good box-set for fans and newbies alike. My only complaints are that it only has 16 episodes, and the extras are nothing to write home about. All minor considering that the stories are engaging, as they are scary and funny at the same time; the video quality is impressive, and the audio is very good. So, if you are a fan of the show, you must buy this set. If you’ve never seen the show, but enjoy horror flicks, this box-set is for you as well.
