Show:
With ratings not as high as NBC hoped, the crreators of Chuck didn’t expect to get a renewal for a third season. The second season tied up all the loose ends with Chuck (Zachary Levi) becoming a spy, his mentor and romantic interest, Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) falling for him and his best friend Morgan following his dreams. But with hardcore fan support and budget cuts, Chuck was renewed for a third season by NBC. The season starts off with Chuck failing a spy test and it gets worse as he gets kicked out from the program and loses his love, Sarah. So it’s back to square one for Chuck. But this time he has “Zoolander” mind control The most interesting part of the season is the addition of Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as a spy for NSA and romantic competition for Chuck’s target, Sarah. It’s always interesting to me when there’s a love triangle. If Chuck already got Sarah from the opening episode, I’d be bored with it because I have no one to root for anymore (this happened in Big Bang Theory). Overall, the show is entertaining but I don’t find it as funny as other viewers. The way the show ended was good though and it was a nice payoff for the hardcore following fans. I like the nerd references from the show and the guest apperances of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Christopher Lloyd.
Show Grade: B+
Video:
The video is presented in 1.85 anamorphic widescreen. I was expecting it to be sharper and clearer. The video is soft and has a lot of noise, even on the daytime scenes. At first, I thought it was only the first episode but the rest were the same. The video is still presentable but I just expected more for a Blu-Ray transfer.
Video Grade: B-
Audio:
5.1 Dolby Digital track is presented for audio (no lossless as with most tv shows). While the video might be a bit disapointing, the Dolby Digital track is pretty busy for a tv show. I like the subwoofer use when things blew up and machine guns were used from a helicopter. Dialog is clear and easy to understand.
Audio Grade: A-
Special Features:
Season 3 comes with a lot of extras including behind the scenes featurettes. The cast and crew talk about the uusual way season 3 played out as well as their on set experiences.
There’s also deleted scenes and a funny segment about the “The Jeffster Revolution”. There’s enough extras on this disk to make any Chuck fans happy.
Special Features Grade: A
Overall:
Season 3 of Chuck started out a little bit forced but that’s because the creators didn’t expect the show to be renewed. Once it got the flow going, the show became fun again. The show truely rewards the audience with a great ending. While the video is a bit soft, the audio is fantastic and the extras is worth watching.
Overall Grade: B+
