10 Things I Hate About You is a fun and light-hearted teen comedy that helped launch the career of the late Heath Ledger. Ledger took what could have been a typical teen heartthrob role and imbued his part with charisma and warmth. He’s well matched with star Julia Stiles and a bunch of future talents, including Joseph Gordon Levitt. This teen update of Taming of The Shrew is a lot of fun, and while not great, it’s certainly worth a look.
10 Things I Hate About You is about a new kid in school named Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who has a crush on a beautiful girl named Bianca, but Bianca is forbidden to date unless her older sister Kat does. Cameron enlists the help of a rugged troublemaker named Patrick (Ledger) to help him get the girl and date Kat. Andrew Keegan also has a thing for Bianca and Keegan was the go-to guy for playing smarmy jerks, which he does here. The blu ray transfer is extremely impressive for a movie that is now ten years old. Quality is very good throughout. The extras include a decent 35 minute documentary which includes new interviews with the writers and director, but only stock footage of the cast. There is also a commentary and even though the box claims there are deleted scenes and screen tests of actor Heath Ledger, those are woven into the documentary.
10 Things I Hate About You is a fun and lively teen update of Taming of the Shrew. While not in the same class as Clueless, it’s still worth seeing, and if you’re a big fan, the blu ray disc is a nice upgrade. The cast makes the movie entertaining along with the catchy non-stop pop-rock tune played throughout. 10 Things I Hate About You is easy to recommend to fans and newcomers alike.
