My favorite Batman story of all time, Year One, will be coming soon to video as an animated movie. Written by Frank Miller, the story shows the struggle of Bruce Wayne as he becomes Batman for the first time. The story also has a subplot of Jim Gordon as he tries to fit in with the Gotham City Police department. According to comics continuum, the movie will be directed by Sam Liu. Liu directed animated straight to video flicks before including Justice League Crisis on Two Earths, Superman/Batman Public Enemies and Hulk Vs.
I’m excited about this news but the more I think about it, the more I think it will suck. Year One’s plot isn’t for kids and I wonder how Liu will translate it. His Superman/Batman Public Enemies was probably the worst DC animated movie I’ve seen because of all the unnecessary characters he included. Liu did a great job with Hulk Vs., so he’s hit and miss. In the end, I think it’ll be up to DC and Warner how they want to treat this story. If they want to treat Batman’s origin with respect, they should approach it like Batman Beyond’s: Return Of The Joker: focus on the story first and worry about selling merchandise later. I also hope the style of the movie will reflect David Mazzucchelli’s old school artwork.

i cant wait. I have year 1 in my protected special collection. Its one of the best stories of Batman.
I think i will have my “anything batman is good” goggles on, so even if they mess it up ill still like it, lol.

They better not mess this up…this was one of the greats. The team of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s work here and on Daredevil’s “Born Again” story arc were some of the best that comics had to offer. This was just before the world of comics got swallowed up by the Perfect Storm of McFarlane/Liefeld/overdrawn art, the cynicism born in The Dark Knight Returns , and the homogenizing of every hero to become either Wolverine or Lobo. Style overtook substance, and comic books became self-conscious, self-congratulatory and all art styles became inbred. What a dark era that was (is?)…
Okay okay, all I’m saying is…Year One was a wonderful moment in comic history. Let’s hope they show it some respect.
