Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable-DVD Review!

Coming to DVD November 13, 2012 is Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable, a motion comic by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday. For those who don’t know, a motion comic is somewhat like a carton, but has only limited animation if any at all. Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable has been taken from paper and print, to video with the addition of music and of course voice acting.

The X-Men are recruited by Brand; a green-haired women with major ties to the government. The heroes are sent into space to stop the Breakworld from destroying Earth.
This DVD features about an hour and 10 minutes worth of broken down, 10-15 minute episodes complete with opening and closing credits. Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable was shown originally on YouTube.com and other internet video websites.

What stands out the most in Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable is the story, it has a mix of bloody action, balanced comedy and well-written drama. Some of the best jokes are actually adult oriented and will have you cracking up! The action is probably over the top with deaths that are unexpected, however all things are explained so there is no need to ban or boycott this series over it. Most of the drama is between Kitty and Colossus and its written so well that it can actually bring the viewer some emotion.

The art and animation is difficult to rate for someone like me who is an old fan of Anime and has probably become an animation snob because of it; so, I’ll be as liberal as I can. The art is nice in such a way that it can simply be thought of as the drawing style for the artist Cassaday, so there really is nothing wrong there. The animation is what it is; a motion comic, there are a few moves here and there and that about covers it. I can’t say that it’s stiff or choppy or makes no sense because not much happens, so to me, it’s kind of boring; however, you might like it.

All in all, Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable is pretty entertaining—mostly through the story. I do want to mention that the DVD is probably along the lines of RATED-R, but PG-13 will suffice. I’d recommend it to comic book fans and fans of X-Men. I originally was going to give this a low rating because it just didn’t sit right with me on many levels, but, I gave it a chance and thought about it for a week and breaking it down by story, art, voice acting and DVD picture quality and sound, I give Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable a…

GRADE: B (As I said, fans of the comic books should pick it up, but all it’s really doing is giving you a high-end way not to have to sit there and read the book).
