I know, I know, they’ve been saying this pretty much since Arrested Development first went off the air. But if you’re a fan of one of the most hilarioius TV shows ever created (like me), you’re holding on to these little bits of crumbs in the hopes that maybe someday all their promises of a show reprisal will come true. At an appearance in New York recently, creator/director Mitchell Hurwitz mentioned that they are in fact working on bringing this movie to light, as well as 9-10 episodes that will hopefully air before the movie is released.
Each episode, he went on to say, would ideally focus on a different character and what each one has been up to in the last 5 years. Hurwitz reported that he’s halfway through a screenplay but that they do not have a studio or network for this project yet. One issue confronting them at this time is finding a film studio and a television network willing to work together on this project. The other has to do with property rights. They don’t own 100% of the show and the other hands involved will need some convincing, apparently.
Jason Bateman added that everyone (I’m guessing he means the cast including narrator Ron Howard) are all on board and that they’re aiming for next summer to begin shooting. Hurwitz went on to clear the air about a running inside joke that got out of hand regarding Michael Cera being the one holding up filming because of his busy schedule. “I kind of was perpetuating a little thing, like, wouldn’t it be funny if Michael Cera was the holdout. Let’s put that out there. And Michael had that Andy Kaufman thing. And then it really turned ugly, quickly. So I really just have to say, for those of you that have been following this saga, Michael’s always been great.” Then Michael Cera chimed in with “Next year, I do have a thing.”
Later on, Bateman reportedly posted this on his twitter: “It’s true. We will do 10 episodes and the movie. Probably shoot them all together next summer for a release in early ‘13. VERY excited!”
Hopefully, Michael, this one is not an illusion….
