Disney has released the first pic of ‘Maleficent.’ Jolie plays the title role. This is an origins movie telling her full story and how she became bad. Let me guess…at first, she’s a kind good-hearted girl. But then something bad happens and she blames herself and becomes the evil witch. Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland and the recent Snow White movie has me less excited about this project. It seems like they can do so much more with these realistic fairy tale movies but they focus too much on the visuals.
Below is the press release:
Burbank, CA (June 19, 2012) – The Walt Disney Studios announced today that production began Wednesday, June 13th, on “Maleficent,” starring Academy Award®–winning actress Angelina Jolie.
Directed by two-time Oscar®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (“Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland”), in his directorial debut, and produced by Joe Roth, “Maleficent” is written by Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith and Palak Patel.
Co-starring in the film are Sharlto Copley (“District 9”), Elle Fanning (“Super 8”), Sam Riley (“On the Road”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Miranda Richardson (“The Hours”), Juno Temple (“Atonement”) and Lesley Manville (“Secrets & Lies”).
This is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.
Behind-the-scenes talent includes Academy Award®–winning cinematographer Dean Semler (“Dances with Wolves,” “In the Land of Blood and Honey”), production designer Gary Freeman (“Saving Private Ryan,” “The Bourne Supremacy”), two-time Oscar® nominated costume designer Anna B. Sheppard (“Schindler’s List,” “The Pianist”) and seven-time Academy Award–winning makeup artist Rick Baker (“Planet of the Apes,” “Men in Black”).
“Maleficent” is scheduled for a March 14, 2014 release in 3D.

I am curious to see what they do with this. I also like seeing a non-animated version of Maleficent. Plus I am kinda interested to see Angelina Jolie in this kind of role. I don’t mind these live action pretty fairy tale movies, but I think it all depends on which fairy tales they do. Alice in Wonderland wasn’t a bad movie, but I’ve never been a big fan of that story. So I didn’t enjoy it all that much.
I liked Snow White and the Huntsman barring a few things, but these days it is hard to find a movie that is perfect from beginning to end.
I would really like to see an updated live action version of The Little Mermaid that is more based on the original fairy tale. Anyways, I ramble too much.

Little Mermaid would be cool. Was the original story also dark?
Snow White was visually pleasing but I just wish the kingdom was built up more.

The original Little Mermiad was somewhat dark. The ending was sad and depressing because she basically sacrifices herself for the prince who ends up falling for someone else. So basically everything she gave up was only for a brief chance at finding happiness.
