Action Figure Review: ShadowHawk

 Action Figure Review: ShadowHawk
Shocker Toys
is the latest company to enter the action figure industry.  The company is focusing on making comic book figures from independent titles such as Maxx and Kabuki.  In the back of the package, it states that the company works closely with the comic book creators to create a figure that truly represent the characters.  I got Shadowhawk and below is the review.

Packaging:

Package is compact and small for the 6 inch figure.  So if you’re a MOC collector, you’ll be happy to save space with this figure.  I also like how you can just slide the cardboard out from the plastic package without destroying it.  Japanese toys have done this for several year now and I’m glad it’s finally being used in the US market.  I just wish that thc cardboard design could have been more appealling instead of the orange/red colors.

Notice that the plastic is not fully sealed to the board

Sculpt:

Shadowhawk’s sculpt is above average.  I got the version without the armor and I have to say it looks better. Shadowhawk with the armor looks too bulky.  My armorless version looks pretty bad ass with his black suit.  The molding could have been refined because the body looks like it could be used for any figure.  I like the helmet that the character is wearing because it really stands out, just like in the comics.

Paint Job
With most toys, the more articulation, the worse the paint job gets.  Shadowhawk has more than 18 points of articulation and I was surprised with the consistency of the paint job.   There’s no smears from the grey colors that could have easily bled with the blacks.  The boots also has a different shade of black compared to ShadowHawk’s uniform.   They could have used more blackwash to make the color stand out more but overall, it’s impressive.

Accessories:
The figure comes with a line hook that can be attached to the arms. It also comes with an Isz figure so you can build an Isz army.  The Isz is well painted and sculpted.  It actually looks cute.

Shocker Toys is going for the same concept as BAF’s(Build a figure) from the DC Universe line and Marvel Legends with the Iszs.  It would have been better if you could actually build one full figure instead of an “army”.
Grade: C+

Articulation:
Like I said before, this figure has more than 18 points of articulation.  You can pose Shadowhawk anyway you want and the joints aren’t loose either.  Pretty much what you want in a toy.

Value:
For a price tag of around $15, I’d have liked the figure to be a bit bigger. My DC Universe figures are an inch or two taller than Shadowhawk.  As you can see in the picture, Wonder Womans dwarfs over Shadowhawk.  I still like this line of figures because they’re finally making toys to comic book characters that aren’t as popular as Batman or Spider-Man.  I applaud Shocker Toys for making a figure that is well articulated, great paint job and good sculpt.
Grade: B

Variations:
There is a Shadowhawk with his armor on.

Conclusion:
I’m glad there is a new player in the toy industry because we can never have enough toy companies.  For the action figure junkies, this is great news because it’ll push each company to release their best products.  The Shadowhawk is a good figure and it can only get better from here.  If they fix several issues, such as the scale and the BAF feature, they’ll have a hit on their hands.
